Vincent Van Gogh only sold a few paintings in his entire lifetime, though he created hundreds of them. He spent his later years in an asylum and cut off his left earlobe in the name of madness. Vincent Van Gogh committed suicide and only then did he get the notice of the art world. Today, Van Gogh paintings are some of the most recognizable pieces of art around the globe, including his most famous, Starry Night painting.
At an early age, Vincent Van Gogh dedicated his life to religion and he spent some time as a missionary in Antwerp, Belgium. He lived with several roommates over the years, traveling in and around Paris and then checked himself into an asylum. He later killed himself at the age of 39 with a self-inflicted gunshot. Throughout all of the Van Gogh paintings that were produced, they were all visibly tied to different aspects of his life.
He used bright colors to help brighten his outlook on things. Many believe that the bright colors and swirls were how he viewed things due to his delusions that he suffered from significantly. He once painted a skeleton smoking a cigarette, which is how he at one point viewed himself because of the smoker’s cough that he was developing.
Starry Night can be analyzed as one of the Van Gogh oil paintings that he made when he was in the asylum. The starry night was what he missed and the town below could be seen as his childhood that was long gone. The steeple of the church in the distance showed that Van Gogh still had a significant desire to be religious and help those in poverty as was his original goal in life. The addition of the dark looming building on the left showed how isolated he felt from the world around him.
Vincent Van Gogh was not successful as a painter in his life, partly because of his personality, his declining mental health and how he did not get along with others. He was a very artistic genius, however. Just looking at any of the Van Gogh paintings can show a plethora of emotions by examining what the brush strokes created.
Van Gogh paintings are artistic and popular because they are true to life. There is a chair sitting in a dark room, a café in Paris at night, portraits of village people who crowd around Vincent Van Gogh. These are all images that people can relate to with a unique perspective given to each one of them.
Vincent Van Gogh loved art from a very early age and this is why many believe he was so good at it. He predominantly self taught the art form, however he did study under various painters throughout his lifetime for small bits of time. His paintings don’t look like those he studied from, however, which is why many believe today that Van Gogh paintings are the work of a genius.
It is hard to determine if Vincent Van Gogh was artistic because of his mental illness or despite his mental illness. Either way, Van Gogh paintings are still some of the most popular works of art and originals can fetch a significant amount of money.
